IAM A Paradox

1 Corinthians 1:18 NLT The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

“A paradox is a statement that doesn’t seem to make sense; but when understood, makes a lot of sense. In fact, a paradox says something that couldn’t be said as well any other way.” George Durham.

More than just being quirky or eccentric, I wonder if people see my life and think that something isn’t right with that person.   In some ways, if we are really doing what God wants us to do, our actions may set off a lot of head scratching.

Many heroes of our faith did some crazy stuff at first glance.

I am not trading in my slim jeans and white belt for burlap and leather sandals.  But, am I fitting in with the ways of this world?  Or am I sticking firm to the standards of our Lord?   And why am I holding firm to those standards?  For the sake of just being right or for the purpose of living in the power of God to be able to help others see the gospel?

From 1 Corinthians 18 to 13 , it’s chock full of wisdom and power!

And as we look in any of the accounts of Jesus, it seemed as he was Mr. Opposite!  Eating dinner with sinners and tax collectors, hiring fisherman to be his disciples, associating and speaking to Samaritan women.

Verse 25 bring some power, if you are willing to hear it: 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.

The greatest, smartest, coolest, most intelligent plan I could ever come up with to do anything, is absolute horse dung compared to what God has cooked up!

The world’s strongest man, is a puny wimp compared to the God’s weakness!

Am I living the paradoxical life of Christ?  I know the only way I can do that is if I continue to spend time with God, and being transformed into his image.  As more and more of my life is changed into Christlikeness, then God’s wisdom and ways start to dominate everything I do.

When I see the panhandler on the street, do  I think, I can’t spare change for you, because I know it’s going straight to your drug and alcohol fund? Or can I start to gain the mind and heart of Christ and bring the real power for transformation of someone else’s heart by being the hand of mercy?

As a father of 2 independent wonderful children, I have learned one thing.  No one can change the mind of another person.  No power or strength can get a 6 year old to eat her vegetables!  Only when they decide it’s good for them.  And they see the good in that choice.

The same with the people in your life that don’t know God (yet!).  Only God can speak to their heart and mind.  We can only do our best to be a reflection of the life and love of Christ to them.  Trust me, they are watching us.  But it’s the power of the Cross that breaks through their reasoning.  And we pray and beg God to audibly speak to them and make it undeniable that He loves them and wants them!

When I am tempted to use the world’s ways to solve a problem, I ask God to give me the strength to get on my knees and pray for kingdom wisdom.  To show me the way of the cross which is most powerful.
